Subject: Free tuition for doctoral studies at Istanbul Technical University

The Center for Advanced Studies in Music (Turkish acronym=MIAM) at Istanbul
Technical University offers master's and doctoral degrees in music,
including specialization in ethnomusicology. The master's program in
ethnomusicology was established in 1999, and the first doctoral student was
accepted in fall 2002. There is no tuition fee for doctoral students
(though there are registration fees of approximately $200 per semester, and
an application fee of about $85). Courses are taught in English, and
include topical seminars, Critical Perspectives in Ethnomusicology, surveys
by continent, and a variety of subjects in Turkish music. MIAM welcomes
students from any country.

Faculty strengths include Papua New Guinean music, Turkish music, avant
jazz, and the interface between avant garde composition and ethnomusicology.
MIAM has the largest English-language music library in Turkey, which is part
of Istanbul Technical University's library system
<http://www.library.itu.edu.tr/tarama_en.html>.
Applicants should have a degree in ethnomusicology, music, or anthropology,
but related disciplines may also be considered.
Doctoral students who enter the program without a degree in ethnomusicology
must take three master's-level core courses or demonstrate mastery of them
to the satisfaction of the faculty.
Completed applications for fall admission must be received by May 24.
