Joe,I was thinking that a nice addition to your micro encyclopedia
might be something like a rollcall off microcultist with something
like a photo and a position statement (maybe a web page link too,but
they tend to become obsolete so quickly that you'd probably be
fielding a lot of request for changes etc.). Anyway ,this was just an
idea that I actually had in a dream last night....

ohh,and for historical figures--i.e., microtonalists that are no
longer with us,the living--maybe you could snag a picture from the
public domain and extract a "position statement" (with and asterisk)
from something they wrote .....

thanks for that idea. actually, as we revamp the Tonalsoft
website, we plan to include an "artists" section, which
will have bios, photos, and audio samples of individual
composers, performers, bands, theorists, etc.

we basically have the website divided into 3 sections now,
each with its own weekly blog:

1) "The Pitch Bend", by our co-founder Chris, explores
technical issues regarding the software and MIDI, etc.

2) "inTune", by yours truly, which is about microtonal
theory and history (but i won't actually start writing
these until after the whole Encyclopedia has been converted
to the new format - another month or two)

3) "MicroBeat", by Jonathan Glasier, covering news, events,
gossip, etc., from the microtonal world

Hi Joe, the site is looking nice! I'm sure you guys have more than enough to do, but please consider adding RSS at some point -- it's not just for weblogs! It would be great to have a feed for each section (at least), and would keep people connected even if they forget to check the page.

RSS is a simple XML file format used by weblogs, news organization (like newspapers and wire services) and other sites. Whenever something is added or updated on the site (or more likely, to a particular area or page on the site), the RSS file gets regenerated. The file has stuff like the title of the item and either a summary or the full text of the item, and it can contain multiple items like this.

People use RSS readers (e.g., http://www.bradsoft.com/feeddemon/, or the one built into my.yahoo.com) to "subscribe" to multiple RSS files, meaning that the reader checks the RSS at those sites on a periodic basis, like once an hour or once a day, and tells you when there's new/updated material. So this keeps people from having to remember to check the site manually. The RSS reader will display the data from the RSS, which could be an excerpt, or full text, or just a link back to the original site.

For example, here's the URL to the RSS on my music site: http://mysterybear.net/?rss=1 (it won't look like much in a browser unless you use View Source).

It's a very widely used technology that's pretty simple, but adds a whole level of accessibility to a site.

Here are a couple of references:

thanks, Dave! i passed this along to our software people
... since the redesign, all i do on the webpages now is
content ... none of the coding, which our software people
handle now.
