Hello everyone

I have written up everything I have learned in the past couple
years on temperments. There is lots on harmonics and
conditions to close the spiral of 5ths, acoustic landmarks,
and what I hope are some clever original diagrams.

1. I hope you enjoy it
2. I hope you will help me flush out any errors.

thanks,
Jeff

P.S. I also have a bunch of stuff, including a graphical
applet to calculate and display virtual pitch, which I hope
to release very shortly. As always, its all open source.

Hi Jeff,

It looks like you could benefit from reading my new paper, which
concerns temperament. I think it could both broaden your scope and
deepen your understanding. If I haven't sent it to you yet, would you
write me off-list with your snail-mail address?

Best,
Paul

Hi Paul

I have written an email to you, but I thought I would respond here
also. Doubtlessly I could benefit from reading your new paper,
and I would like to. On the other hand, I still haven't finished
"Tuning, TOnality and 22-Tone equal Temperment" yet! It was
confusing passages in that paper that (partly) led me to
try to develop temperment ideas in a way that seemed to best
make sense to my way of thinking (pretty much a straight lineage
from Helmholtz).

Personally, I think that for the maximal exchange of information,
I would wish for you, and others, to make comments about what
I have done so far, rather than come from a completely different
frame of reference.

P.S. Evidently that new worm/virus/whatever is making a mess
with my internet service provider and the web server hosting
my online paper today...

1) It's spelled "Temperament", not "temperment". :)

2) Temperaments, including 12-tone equal temperament and meantone,
can be derived from JI by positing certain equivalencies between
ratios, resulting in tuning systems less complex than JI. The paper
that I will send you explains this and shows how many of the
resulting temperaments are *not* spirals of fifths. I've also been
told that the new paper is far clearer than _Tuning, Tonality, and
Twenty-Two-Tone Temperament_. So I think you should read it!

3) If you still have any confusions concerning any of my older
papers, please allow me to clear them up for you.

4) I will make comments on what you have when I get a chance. But I
feel this will be more productive/helpful after you have read my new
paper, whether you choose to modify anything on your webpage because
of it or not. At least you'll have a better sense of where I'm coming
from with my (forthcoming) comments!

Until later,
Paul

I think I hate this web browser; when I went to send somehow it
wiped out all my changes and just reposted the original text!
sorry

Thanks, Paul. I've been spelling it that way for years!

SO the URL is now

Yes, as I posted late last night, I have been spelling
Temperament wrong for years, but it is corrected now!
