Anyone care to share their strategies for inspecting MIDI
files? I used to love the event list editor in the Justonic
Pitch Palette, but I can't see installing that ancient suite
in this day and age. I also used to use Cakewalk's MIDI
event list viewer, but I can't see installing the ancient
version I have of that either. Anyone know of some good
fast-and-light software for doing this job (for Windows)?

I recently upgraded to Cakewalk Music Creator Pro24 2004; all these years I've been using Cakewalk Home Studio 3.01 (copyright 1991-1994!), which I still prefer in some ways, but it doesn't get along well with Windows XP, like many older applications. The biggest annoyance I have with the new version of Cakewalk is that there isn't any interface that I can find for editing note names for the piano roll, but the old files still work, and I've found out that it's just stored in an editable text file, so I really don't need to edit it from inside Cakewalk. In any case, the event list is still there, and functions pretty much the same as in the earlier version. But there are versions of Cakewalk that don't have the event list, so be sure to check the feature list.
