You can certainly build a fanned fingerboard for your own use without
paying
a licensing fee. Furthermore, I believe there is prior art for the Novak
system, in which case the patent may not prevent other uses.

Dan Stearns:

I have the results of a barbershop forum discussion on how they tune at

Paul E- Could I post your current set of tutorials on my web page?

And a very interesting model of tuning it is...

"The conclusion is that we don't use a single particular scale or
tuning. (!) The lead sings a melody line that sounds pleasing on its
own, and remains true to its key. Whenever the lead sings the tonic,
it has to be the same tonic. As I so mathematically (sorry)
pointedout in my first post, the Just Intoned scale is not suited for
these
goals. So the lead uses Pythagorean or Equal-Tempered or even some
compromise between the two -- it probably doesn't even matter, as long
as his melody sounds like a melody."

This is definitely the sort of thing I had remembered coming across
when I mentioned "near-Pythagorean" in the (vertical) context of a
tuning model that distinguishes between, and then combines, a harmonic
and a melodic tuning. Fascinating stuff - thanks for the reference
John.

Hi Gang,

Can you add me to the club and concert listings for any and all upcoming
shows, band mailing lists, newsworthy press releases and info? If you're in
a band, or know someone who is (yeah, like DUH), spread the word..I do the
listings for Jam Canoe, Canada's largest internet entertainment web site,
owned by Sun Newspapers. We have about 40 million pages hits a week, and
you can go to http://www.canoe.ca/jam for all the info. There's on average
close to 5,000 shows listed at any given time. Email works the best, but
you can also fax it to me at the numbers at Koch International below.
Thanks for all your help
Cheers and best of luck,
Eric Alper

Sure! Part 2 will is coming up when I return to the office for work. I won't
attempt clear explanations on the weekend for I am a "wasted drunk" :)

Ron Nagorka is a very important and experimental Australian composer whose work combines beautiful and sophisticated didj playing with just intonation. He's not nearly as well known as he should be, but he's someone whose work and ideas I respect a lot.
