Vallotti or Valotti?

a quick question: which one is correct, Vallotti or Valotti?

thanks. but there are a lot of web sites that use Valotti as much as Vallotti. i guess it really doesn't matter which but i'm just curious if there is a "correct" one, these are two different people, both correct, or nobody cares. does anybody "know"?

Both Google and Jorgenson confirm that Vallotti is the correct
spelling.

But we ought to keep in mind that in Vallotti's time people
were not so fussy about spelling than nowadays. And they
often spelled even their own name in different ways.

that is one of the reasons why i've listed the possibilities of "both correct" and "nobody cares." :)

Vallotti is italian, right? does anybody on this mailing list speak italian or know someone named Vallotti or Valotti?

sorry to be late with this reply.
I'm from Italy, so maybe I could help you with your doubt.
I made a quick search on the telephone directory of all Italy (it is available on the internet), and found 20 Vallotti, and 162 Valotti, mostly in northern Italy; I don't know how much this could be of help.

Manuel's comment is quite right; sometimes you may find the same name spelled differently even within the same document.

Vallotti is well known not only for his writings; there is a number of letters he exchanged with other scholars of his time, as well as comments about him, all proving the existence of only one person who devoted himself to music and tuning problems, at least at a high level.
An interesting study containing such material is "Acustica, accordatura e temperamento nell'Illuminismo veneto" by Patrizio Barbieri (in Italian only).

I think you should check whether the "Valotti" version comes from antiquity, or is just a corruption originated by the web site compilers. More then often I find my own last name, that is phonically similar to "Vallotti", written "Peretti", perhaps because of a difficulty of Anglo-Saxon languages with this kind of phoneme.
