New master’s program in multimedia composition at the Hamburg
Hochschule für Musik und Theater

Starting in the winter semester 2004/05, the Hamburg Hochschule für
Musik und Theater is introducing a new master’s program in multimedia
composition. By hiring Georg Hajdu in 2002 as professor of multimedia
composition, the Hochschule laid the groundwork for this innovative and
high-profile program.

The Hochschule’s first master’s program -- long-term integration of
multimedia into the school’s curriculum
The Hochschule fulfils two demands of recent educational policies by
introducing its first master’s program and permanently integrating
multimedia into the school’s curriculum. The goal is to enable
musicians to meet the challenge of a world increasingly dominated by
media. The program will give them the chance to develop an artistic
competence, while at the same time, opening new professional
opportunities.

Target group
The interdisciplinary two-year program is primarily directed at
• composers with an interest in media as well as
• media artists and computer scientists with an interest in music

Curriculum
The modular program includes:
• Algorithmic composition (with Max/MSP and OpenMusic)
• Digital sound processing and live electronics
• Plug-in design
• Live interaction of music and video
• Network and Internet composition
• Work in a digital production studio
• Aesthetics of new media
• Microtonal composition
• Radio plays and soundscapes

Requirements
• University degree in composition, music theory, musicology, computer
science, film/video, visual arts, theater directing and kindred arts.
• Aptitude demonstrated by a written entrance exam and a portfolio of
at least three substantial works
• Proof of sufficient command of English language (e.g. TOEFL)
• For foreigners: proof of advanced command of German language (e.g.
Goethe Institute certificate)

Fees
Prospective students are advised to contact the Studentensekretariat or
the International Office (see below) for further information.

Cooperation
The cooperation and sharing of class offerings with other Hamburg
schools and universities (e.g. the Hochschule für Bildende Kunst, the
university of applied science and the university of Hamburg) is a vital
element of the program.

Enrollment
The program will start in the winter semester of 2004/05. The deadline
for applications is May 31, 2004 (postmarked).

I see there is now a beta version of a Linux port for OpenMusic out.
