How would one go about getting an unusual keyboard of ones own design
made? I hope this
is an appropriate question for this list.

Try making contact with Bob Benchic of Gainesville FL.

He has modified standard synthesizers and also is in the process of
designing a matrix midi keyboard controller.

He may be reached at benchic@gnv.fdt.net

What kind of budget do you have to work with?

Definitely.

The South East Just Intonation has built now two functional tunable
microinterval synthesizers from donations to the old SEIJC and is currently
manufacturing a Lambdoma Matrix proto for Denny Genovese of the WOrld
Harmony Project. We would gladly build you a synth to whatever spec you
deemed necessary with most any interface you can desire. The matrix for
Pandit GEnovese is 12by 16 presently but it is only a proto.
inquiries can be sent to benchic@fdt.net----Robert Benchic our
astounding, innovative techlord. Or if you are wanting rapid info you may
email me back at anytime.

Hmmm... Well, I interpreted the question - perhaps incorrectly - to be
asking for thoughts regarding how to build nontraditional keyboards. I had a
few thoughts depending on how much money they had to work with. So I wasn't
... soliciting bids, so to speak.
