The first sentence under the first section (entitled "Definition of
the Barbershop Style") of the SPEBSQSA _CONTEST AND JUDGING HANDBOOK_
(August,2001; p. iii) reads:

"Barbershop harmony is a style of unaccompanied vocal music
characterized by consonant four-part chords for every melody note in
a predominantly homophonic texture."
