It's not necessary to think of acoustic instruments capable of greater
expression than acoustic ones. As something of a futurist, I believe it's a
matter of technology advancing to the inevitable point where electronic
instruments will truly come into their own, as "fluid" conduits for our
creative instincts. This will of course include the long overdue demise of
MIDI ;-)

For an idea of what I mean, there's an episode of Star trek : the next
generation involving an extremely advanced civilization where they "play"
music without touching the instrument.I think it was a sphere of some kind ?
The episode involved one of the kids on the Enterprise having the talent for
pulling the feat off.

Computer graphics tools have in fact reached a far higher level than current
music tools.

New paradigms are called for. Especially with regard to writing microtonal
music, thinking linearly seems counter productive (is that 2 words or 1...).
Those of u with a Mac should download the demo version of james McCartney's
Super Collider <http://www.audiosynth.com> for an example of a tool that
fosters non-linear composition, and does not require MIDI. Think of it as a
self contained instrument with supreme microtonal capabilities.

Algorithmic composition ? Well,... that's only one way of looking at it.
Much as I hate to use a corporate catch phrase (Steve Jobs' genius not
withstanding) the modern musician needs to "think different !".
Very different.

The proliferation of anti-social :-) elements such as Britney Spears and the
like may appear to portend the steady decline of human civilization, but
Jimi & Cage still have fans, Chandra is up there to study Black Holes,
getting web pages to render identically in IE & Navigator is still a %$#!%,
and Elvis lives in Bangkok. Hope lives on...

So there !
