That's most distressing to hear... I've been playing a fretless Les
Paul with an ENORMOUS (about 42 centimeters at the nut, 58 centimeters
at the body, 18 inches long and a little over a 1/4 of an inch thick)
aluminum finger board for about eight years now... Actually, about a
year ago I switched over to mostly playing my fretless Kramer, because
of the weight difference - a little over three pounds (the Les Paul
weighs in at a nerve pinching 10+ pounds). However, I still much
prefer the playability of the aluminum finger board Les Paul, and
continue to use it for all two-handed-tapping playing, and for its
particular tone (and its previously mentioned playability) on
recordings. Anyway, thanks (Rick) for the lacquer and finish tips...

Aluminum IS associated with Altzheimer's in that it is present in
high quantities among sufferers of that disease, BUT, aluminum is
also present in large quantities in things we consume every day. Most
of us excrete the excess without difficulty. Last I heard, there is no
evidence that cutting back aluminum exposure will reduce the risk of
Altzheimer's.
