Sound experiments?

Does anyone know of a good way to setup experiments with a
fundemental tone and a variable pitch played at the same time?
Ideally, the tones would be measurable, especially in relation to
each other.

this was the subject of a "lab" involving old analog oscillators in
an intro physics class i took freshman year. if you don't have access
to such machines, one possibility would be an electronic tuner hooked
up to a guitar (though you'd have to stop and measure each pitch
individually every time you heard an interval you liked). another
possibility is a simple computer applet -- i bet someone on this list
could whip something up for you without too much effort . . .

anyway, i strongly encourage this kind of experimentation -- i know
it was very important for me, and some detractors of just intonation
seem to have gone through their musical lives without even trying
it . . .

Sing along with a tambura, loop a drone on a looping device
like a Line 6 DL-4 and play slide guitar over it.

Use a digital synthesizer and tweek the tuning tables.

If you got (or have access to) a Macintosh computer, you may try with my tuning/tone generator program. It was designed to investigate temperaments in pipe organs, and tune them; anyway, it should be reliable for the experiments you mention.

Leonardo,

Is there a link for your program?? I have written a simple tuning program myself, and have found somethings that make me wonder just how accurate the program is, and I would like to test against other programs.

Thanks,

Mike

Michael,

No, I haven't put it on the 'net yet; some parts are still under development, since a long time; tone generation section works well.
I can send you a copy, if you like. The latest English version is dated August, 2000; I made some more work on the Italian version in the meantime, but have still to translate it.
Let me know

Leonardo
