These are questions I have for all who can/want to respond
to these questions from a techno-neophyte:

1) What are the easiest (read: "user-friendly"), affordable
(read: "under $2,000") samplers/synths around that
are microtonal/JI-capable?
I am especially interested in samplers.

2) Are there ones that are capable of being programmed
independently of any computer?
What programming system(s) is(are) available for these
samplers/synths?

3) Are these samplers/synths capable of storing how many
scale systems?
I would ideally like to have at least 5 scale systems on hand.

Thank you for your Time & Space in this musical Matter,

I believe that the latest Emu Proteus (name/number?) also supports
user-definable scales, and indeed comes with several alternative tunings.
The price looks quite attractive, but I haven't yet had time to try one.

<<I believe that the latest Emu Proteus (name/number?) also supports
user-definable scales...>> <snip>

The Kurzweils have the advantage over the Proteus series in that they can be
set to select their samples by virtue of the intended pitch rather than the
MIDI key number, which avoids 'chipmunking' and other side effect of playing
samples out of register. I ran into this problem on my Proteus/1. I
understand that this is still a problem even on their latest Morpheus.
Check with Emu Systems before buying one.
