MUSICALITY OF QUARTERTONES SYSTEMS
International Symposium and Concerts, August 2004, Le Thoronet (Var,
France)
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

By which systems can we introduce ourselves to microtonal music ?
Is not tempered quartertones music, the main microtonal repertory in
Europe,
born from an arbitrary choice (splitting semitones), imposed by the
generalized
use of the 12 tones equal temperament ? Then how could Egyptian
classical and
popular music, for example, so rapidly integrate this system, in spite
of its
limitations concerning the Arabian music intonation complexity and
variety ?
Never scientifically studied untill now, what are the musical resources
of the
tempered or just intonation quartertones systems, and do they present an
alternative
as valuable as the various systems of 19, 31, 43 tones per octave often
favored
by American microtonalists ?

A constructive debate on these questions between the world's best
specialists
of traditional and contemporary quartertone music, instruments makers,
musicologists,
musicians, composers, should help to take bearings on what constitutes
one important
musical heritage of humanity and will certainly be one of the future
gates for
this third millennium's new music.
To not stay only theorical, this East-West meeting should be also human
and
artistic, and the project includes the invitation of musicians from the
whole
world in creation residencies, workshops, that will finalize by a
three-day
concert series during the 4th "Noces harmoniques" festival in Le
Thoronet
and other places.
Precise dates, access, conditions of participation and accommodation
issues will be
communicated as soon as possible.
All intentions of papers, concerts or other propositions can already be
