Basil-
I have been playing 19, 31 and 34 guitars and basses for a while
now, and I recommend 19 for someone who wants to play rock. 19 can be very
tonal, and you can easily navigate once you learn how to think about
scales. 31 and 34 are excellent for tonal music also, but more difficult
to get used to, simply because of the number of frets.
