The Odysseus Cello Concert was conceived for cellist Dave Eggar following
several years of close collaboration, in numerous performances. The work is
set to the chronological journey that Homer penned of Odysseus' return from
Troy to Ithaca. The St. Paul's Chapel at Columbia University is the ideal
terrain for the troupe of Achaen Greeks as they move throughout, only to
encounter islands of new instrument combinations. Each instrument
corresponds to a character in the book, with unique tunings, indicative of
its unique personality. All are improvising throughout. As Athena called
the protagonist Odysseus "The Master Improviser, so here Odysseus is a master
improviser. The piece is formed by an Iintroduction, three full sections,
and a coda.
