Hello all
In his book "On the sensations of tone" , I can't seem to find what are the little numbers that appear next to a note name a little under or upper.
I know that the little numbers before the note name refer to the harmonic number on the harmonic series.

The first page I came across these is 17 , on the scale of the
harmonical table under the notes tab.

ah. those numbers indicate syntonic comma deviations from pythagorean
tuning. you might want to read monz's dictionary entry on "HEWM".
helmholtz uses the basic notation to indicate pythagorean pitches.
then the rest of 5-limit just intonation is obtained with these
syntonic comma shifts. the "just major scale" has e, a, and b lowered
by one syntonic comma relative to the pythagorean major scale. making
sense?
