web hosting

Hi I know this is not strictly appropriate for this list, but I know there
are alot more people here then on metatuning who might be able to give an
opinion, and this is an issue that might be of interest to other musicians..

I am tired of mp3.com et al for putting up soundfiles and would like to find
webhosting with unlimited storage and bandwith. There seem to be lots out
there with rates ~$50 per year (which sounds good) but I find a site then do
a search to see opinions and come across people saying "they suck" so I'm
wondering if anyone here has experience with webhosting that doesn't cost an
arm and a leg? We musicians need places we can put up as many mp3s as we
want without bandwidth problems and without having to wait for them to be
cleared!!!

thanks

Dante

I'll be brief, since I'm 'bending the rules' too: you might want to take a look at http://www.catalog.com/ which I'm using for microtonal.org. And - more importantly - write to Jeff Scott, as he and I have just corresponded about his site moving there - initially there were problems, but they seem to be ironed out, and his needs were greater than mine; I'm sure you could get good impressions from him.

Catalog.com was #1 for low-cost hosting in a study by CNET, so you might want to check their site (http://www.cnet.com/) for the review and follow-ups.

And now, back to our (recently) low-traffic version of the tuning list...

Cheers,
Jon

I offered a long time ago to put up mp3's on Columbia's web engine. It's
free, there are no ads, and space is (more or less) unlimited.

The only bad thing is that according to my sys-admin, I can't set up a
system where we can upload stuff directly: all mp3's have to be sent to
me via e-mail (or snail mail, if they're really big.)

In fact, I'd be happy to host the entirety of microtonal.org. Jon, I
might even be able to get you administrative log-on priviledges, etc.

If we want to do this, can we wait 'til mid-August, when I finish my
dissertation? Then I'd be happy to devote some energy to setting it all
up.

thanks,

cb

Thanks for the offer - I'll write you off-list in a couple of weeks to give you breathing room...

Cheers,
Jon

Somebody mentioned a site called zebox awhile ago (was it you Jon?). If all
you're looking for is a place to make mp3s instantly available, it seems to
be the ticket. I just created a page to go with another site of mine, it
took a couple of minutes, I uploaded a mp3 and it was instantly available
(no waits for clearance like at mp3.com!).

http://www.zebox.com/index.html

and my ultra no-frills page is:

http://www.zebox.com/danterosati/

its the best arrangement ive run across yet (not sure if there are any
limits as to # of audio files- there doesn't seem to be)

I think it might have been Dan Stearns (a person I'm still missing a lot...). I think Gene Smith has been using it as well?

I tried it but there does seem to be a limitation on how much you can put up.

Nice to see someone else playing the Spanish masters from the tablature.
