Greetings all,
Part of our last well-tempered recording was a three way
comparison of
temperaments on a modern Steinway concert piano. Pianist Enid Katahn
performed
Mozart's Fantasie in 1/4 comma meantone, a Prelleur well-temperament
from
Mozart's era, and in today's equal temperament.
The purpose was to demonstrate
1) the harmonic restriction that meantone created
2) the tonal texture the well-temperament provides
3) the homogenized sound that equal temperament has

These examples can be heard at
http://artists.mp3s.com/artists/399/six_degrees_of_tonality.html
The 'wolf' becomes quite evident at the 32 second mark.
The purpose of this comparison is not to recreate the sound of
Mozart's
fortepiano, but rather, to demonstrate that modern pianos need not be
limited
to equal temperament. The record company has given permission to
download
these three tracks if anybody cares to make their own copy.
The first two examples are listed with pictures etc. but all
three
versions are available under the "play all tracks" button.
