HP had a lot to say about temperament. Let me collect a few quotes, and I'll
get back to you.

I can suggest Partch as a somewhat polemical source for the old tunings and
he is quite comprehensive. Has anyone read Shlesinger's the Greek Aulos?

The 5-7 numbers are a coincidence, it's just the average time span. I've
seen other estimations of the "musical present" as around 10 secs.
