Darren: Wim performs on a Walter Vogt guitar which has moveable frets - one
fret per note, per string. (I, too, own such an instrument!) It was
originally designed to rectify errors in string bending in order to play
12/tone ET absolutely accurately, but of course Wim & I have taken advantage
to tune any darned way we please! Technically, there is a 'u'-shaped groove
that runs underneath each string for its entire length: into which are
pushed little 'fretlets', each of which represent one note for each string.
There are photographs of the isntrument & the fretlets in 1/1 under the
article entitled JUST GUITAR that I did a few years ago (can't remember the
volume # just now). Wim just played here at this year's MicroFest here in
Los Angeles (May 8/'99) many of the same pieces that were played in New
York.
My Vogt guitar is presently fretted for a new work by Ben Johnston in
13/limit JI ( up to 17 frets/string, gulpp!) but the instrument was used for
12/tone JI on all the cuts on the album Just West Coast (Bridge records)
with the exception of the Partch BARSTOW.
Hope this helps!
