With reference to Paul's story (aug.2nd vs minor 3rd) and Monz's reaction:
you might remember that Aristoxenus makes quite a big deal out of
same-sized intervals having different functions. It's quite a spectacular
passage. He talks about the "simple", i.e. non-composite, ditone at the
top of an enharmonic tetrachord being entirely different from the
composite interval of two tones between the lichanos of a diatonic
tetrachord and mese of a disjunct tetrachord above it--despite them having
exactly the same size.
