I would like to notify subscribers of a concert of microtonal music for
amplified tenor recorder given by the French recorder virtuoso Philippe
Renard which will form part of the Seventh Annual American Recorder Society
Recorder Relay at the Boston Early Music Festival. It will take place at
the Emmanuel Church Library (15 Newbury St., Boston) on Saturday June 12th
1999 at 11:30 a.m..
The programme is as follows:
The Evolution of Line by Donald Bousted
The Winds of Heaven by Christopher Fox
Daphno by Franois Ross
Tmeo by Bernard Thomas
The two French works use quarter-tone inflections, Winds of Heaven uses
glissandi and 12 second delay to acheive a very expressive non-fixed
microtonal result and my own piece, which was written especially for
Philippe's instrument - more below - is a structured quarter- and
eighth-tone work.
The instrument is made by Philippe BOLTON and has an in-built microphone
linked to a quiet, high quality and highly effective amplification/midi
system. BOLTON and RENARD have been working on the recorder/system together
for some years
meanwhile adapting and commissioning new repertoire. The recorder itself is
a four-piece, large instrument with excellent multiphonic possibilities.
The large holes mean that microtones are easier and a bell key increases
the bottom range and increases speed and stability at the top.
I would recommend a look if you are nearby!
