The report of the death of my career due to my excursion into
microtonality is an exaggeration.

I was fortunate to be one of the winners of a competition with my new
work _Blackjack_ for trombone and electronics. It's being considered
for a possible CD by the British Trombone Society.

This is the piece in Blackjack written with the Sims/Maneri 72-tET
notation.

Curiously enough, there were *72* entries to this competition...

Here's the letter:

Dear Joseph,

Here are the results of the competition.
As you will see, your work was singled out for special mention, and
we are delighted that we will be able to work with you in preparing
your score. To help us with the performances and recordings, we will
need performing material of all the scores marked with an asterisk
by February 1st.

If anyone has difficulties with part production ( especially
composers without computing facilities ) please contact me directly,

Congratulations,

Owen Wales.

Brass in Association

Leeds University School of Music, Black Dyke Band
SPNM, British Trombone Society

As you will know from our earlier correspondence, Leeds University
Music School, in association with Black Dyke Band, The British
Trombone Society, and the Society for the Promotion of New Music,
issued a call for new compositions for brass instruments at the
beginning of the academic year. We have been delighted with the
response, and have received a total of 72 scores from 10 Countries.
The standard was exceptionally high and the judging very difficult.
Nevertheless, the wide range of work submitted and its broad
stylistic umbrella has made this new competition a very welcome
addition to the composer's calendar.

Many thanks to all entrants.

At Black Dyke's concert at the RNCM on Friday Jan 18th, the
following results were announced.

For Brass Band Scores, there will be three performances.
From Switzerland, Oliver Waespi of his score Passacaglia*
From the U.K. David Lancaster, of his score Cuba *,
and Ian Clarke for his Turn of the Tumblers *.

For Solo Trombone Pieces, there will be one performance.
From Republic of Ireland, Ailis Ni Rain for her music theatre score
Flat-Footed-Former-Flyer.

In the Trombone Ensemble category, there will be one performance of
the Italian score from Lucca Vanneschi, his Three Angels.

In the Concerto category, there will be one performance of the
Concerto* by Marc Owen

The Trombone trio by Carl Alexander Vincent The Nominal Three* will
be premiered on Black Dyke's American Tour in February and will join
music by Bernard Hughes, Jonathan Santore*, Sampo Haapmaki, Luca
Vanneschi, Tom Benjamin*, and Joseph Pehrson, Terry Mann*, Johann
Evenpoel*, Colin Bugby, Peter Hartley, and Paul Lovatt-Cooper* in
being considered for inclusion in the BTS CD Recording.
