The programme is traditional music from Japan and a new work
of Frank Denyer which is called Unnamed Composition. It employs
simultaneous use of different tuning principles.

Because of several requests to give another last concert on the 31-tone
organ, Joop van Goozen will play on Sunday 5 March, 11.00 h. in the
Teylers Museum in Haarlem. So this is really the last chance to hear the
organ in its historical location, before it will be disassembled and
stored for a few years. He will play old music and improvisation.

I'd love to attend, but I'm not sure whether the concert is taking place
just an A-train ride away (in Harlem) or somewhere on the other side of the
ocean.

Students of the course Contemporary Music Through Non-Western Techniques

Rafael Reina teaches this course for some years at the conservatory of
Amsterdam. Its main subject is application of South-Indian concepts
about rhythm, microtonality and ornamentation to Western composition.
The concert is given by the students in cooperation with the
Huygens-Fokker foundation.

Wie is er nieuwsgierig naar de muziek van de toekomst? Ongebruikelijke
stemmingen, kwarttonen, micro-intervallen: ons oor spitst zich, ontwikkelt
een nieuwe verfijning. Componisten verrijken hun melodische en harmonische
taal, ontginnen nieuwe paden. Het Verfijnde Oor is een project over
intonaties en microtonen.

Componistenpracticum
Vanaf september 2002 tot juni 2003 organiseerde het Nieuw Ensemble een
componistenpracticum rond dit thema. In regelmatig gehouden workshopsessies
onderzochten compositiestudenten van de conservatoria van Amsterdam,
Rotterdam, Den Haag en Utrecht samen met de musici van het Nieuw Ensemble
de vele mogelijkheden van ándere dan de gebruikelijke twaalf tonen van onze
westerse muziek. Tijdens deze componistenpractica componeerden twintig
studenten ieder een microtonaal werk voor het ensemble. Hiervan beleefden
10 stukken in februari 2003 hun première.
Op vrijdag 5 september a.s. wordt in het kader van de Internationale
Gaudeamus Muziekweek de tweede oogst van 10 stukken gepresenteerd in de
kleine zaal van het Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. In de aanloop naar het
concert is er op dinsdag 2 september om 14.30 in de IJsbreker een workshop
over dit project . De jonge componisten zullen hier hun ervaringen
toelichten en een aantal musici geven instrumentale demonstraties.
