Scala retunings

I tried retuning Josquin's Ave Maria to the 22, 31 and 53 ets, and
the results were uniformly hideous. I then tried the 72-et, thinking
maybe it would not use any pitch bends. In fact it used a ton, and
the result once again was horrible. I then tried the 12-et, which
wasn't bad but which even so used 4 pitch bend commands. Finally, I
tried the 22-et with number of tones set to 12, and it was still
awful. So I went the other way, and tried *more* tones. Still ghastly.

Is there a right way to do this?

How could that be? What am I missing here?

31 should work wonderfully if you don't treat dominant seventh chords
as 4:5:6:7 chords . . . Then again, I have no idea what exactly
you're doing here.
