Ah... no! Just don't assume your "questions," "observations," and conclusions are mine.

What reason? What type?

First of all If I assume that your observations were mine, there would be no reason to state them. I state
my views as a compensation to assumptions I see being made. Hear on this list I am aware that I arrived
from a completely different direction that most. Being the case it could quite possibly be the wrong forum
for my ideas, especially if the environment is such that despite its pretext is predominantly focused on
ETs, non acoustic music derived predominantly for western musical assumptions (with a few exceptions).
Just as those who participate in the above worthwhile practices have their philosophical background on
which a host of others idea gravitate, it would seem logical that an opposite musical practice would be a
gravity to other ways of seeing. Frankly a while back I listed Why I preferred JI over ET. I expected to
get a list back. ( i had even thought of a few myself) My observations were not a conclusions that they
were universal!
BTW I heard and maybe this needs to be corrected that Ravi Shankar was turned down for teaching job at
UCSD because they said they considered him an "untrained" musician. How else could they compete!

(if this is even true) I'm sure his worldwide fame from playing to overflow
crowds of adoring and appreciative fans somewhat lessoned the blow of
rejection. :-) Meanwhile those who rejected him sit in their offices
pushing paper and sucking up to rich old ladies to try and raise money.

This is what is funny about the whole thing! what better way to raise money
and attach students. I was hoping someone on the list knew more!

I'm curious as to what these "assumptions" (specifically referencing "serialism," "number games," and "ET") are?

Well if you expected a list of why I prefer ET over JI... I wouldn't have one to give back;-- as I don't.

The last time I saw the UCSD catalog, RS was listed as a university
professor, which is the highest honor that UC can bestow, with privileges
like not having to teach formally or do administrative tasks. UCSD has a
long history of hiring musician in the past without standard academic
credential (Partch, Romero, Cheatham, Oliveros). The surprising thing about
Shankar is that at his age (he hasn't bother to play well in many years)
and with his commercial success, he even accepted the post.

it can get back to being one of the bright spots...]

Was there ever a time when that department was not chaotic?

This is what Ace Ventura was talking about in When Nature Calls,
an otherwise pretty lame movie :
Chopper pilot says," If I were you I wouldn't do that"
(or something to that effect)
Ace says, " If I were you, I'd use your body to do it.
See, you can't stop me no matter who you are."
