>I am referring to the process of number divorced from the ear.

Who/what (specifically) would you say best (negatively) exemplifies this
"process of number divorced from the ear?"

>If I like such a piece it is because of nothing to do with this structure!
What happens a piece is successful despite the lack of success of the
composers intention! I have never really resolved this one!

IMO (which may or may not be of any worth whatsoever), if you like it - you
like it... If not -- NOT. The rest will be debated articulated & largely
ignored into oblivion.

>I have seen and know of of too many composers who put the notes down
before they know the sound.

And I, too many composers, musicians, and listeners who know the sound
before they put the notes down! Again, if you like it - you like it...

>In the case of Cage, I do believe though that he was quite aware of what
"chance" is and what the sound would be.

Couldn't it be argued that this is the (fundamental) epitome of: "divorced
from the ear..." Where do you draw the line between the 'habitual ear' and
the 'actual ear?'

Do we need to! I have now reason to accept only one type of hearing
