Douglas Leedy sent me the following reference:

Kolinski, Mieczyslaw: "Gestalt Hearing of Intervals", pp. 368-74, in _The
Commonwealth of Music_ (Festschrift for Curt Sachs) ed. G. Reese and R.
Brandel, NY:Free Press 1965.

The experiment described uses the somewhat arbitrary basis of superimposed
5- and 7tet scales, but does provide one illustration of how the perception
of melodic intervals can be compromised or 'bent' by their context.
