ever since I read Frank Zappa's autobiography, I've been dying to hear some of Verese's work...
any recommendations?

I heard that Captain Beefheart's band uses microtonal music at times. <shrug>

Alex,

As far as Varese's music is concerned, there's not much of it to find. In
fact, I'm pretty sure that the entire catalogue of his works would fit on 2
CDs. If I remember correctly, he burned all of his early pieces at one
time, so there's really not much left. (The fire may have been an
accident, I can't quite remember.) Anyway, there are a number of CDs that
have various combinations of his pieces. I would personally recommend
(pieces): Ameriques (very _Rite of Spring_-ish), Ionisation, Integrales,
Poem Electronique, and Hyperprism. Also, if you can find a recording of
Deserts that includes the tape-part, snatch it up. The only CD I know of
that has Deserts on it (conducted by Boulez) doesn't include the tape
parts.

Cheers,

Deserts is the piece that inspired FZ as you probably know.
Poeme Electronique is required listening for any EA student and is wonderful.
Ionisation is my personal fave with sirens and percussion orchestra
there are several CDs available -the best seem to have Boulez conducting(very energetic). I am
pretty sure Slonimsky hosted his 1st American concerts
