I found this on an old archive of rec.music.early. Ring any bells for
anyone? Margo?

"However, a French composer of the mid-16th century (I've forgotten
his
name--was it de Bertrand?) published two chansons which were composed
using Vicentino's notation and microtonal cadential formulas. In the
second edition, though, he removed the superposed dots indicating
raising of the note by an enharmonic diesis (NB: *not* a quarter-
tone!),
reducing the compositions to ordinary chromaticism."
