Viking "Edda" in New York

Yesterday's New York Times had an article about a
recreation of the Icelandic "Edda" being performed
this week in New York.

You can subscribe to the Times on the web free and
read the article here:
http://www.nytimes.com/2001/07/08/arts/08JOHA.html

I'm mentioning this here because the person who put
this together, Benjamin Bagby, studied Icelandic
folk song as part of his recreation, and while the
article doesn't discuss tuning, I'd bet that there
is (or at least, should be) something interesting
happening in the tuning of this piece.

I'm also especially interested in it because of my
ongoing _Beowulf_ opera project. I'm setting Beowulf
in Old English, and this Edda is also being given in
it original language of Old Norse.

Sure wish I could be in NYC this week... I'd love to
hear about it if any of you New Yorkers can attend.

Yesterday's Times also has another article, on a new opera
being premiered, which is based on the life of Gesualdo,
"composer and murderer", as the article puts it. His
name has popped up here occasionally, so some folks
here might be interested.

Thought I'd mention 'Edda' by Sequentia on Deutsche Harmonia Mundi. One of my favourites.

Regards.

One of my favourites.

I second that e-motion. It's excellent background music for any kind
of medieval or medieval-fantasy reading or gaming. Perfect for the
computer game Hexen.
