Paul is bringing up something here that describes a position
I've often found myself in when reading your terse posts.

Could you *please* quote *something* from the post you're
responding to, so that your response is in context? Thanks!

Joe, nice to hear from you. Is n^0" a mathematical symbol for Rome? What does it mean?

Sorry i'm a math lunkhead.

Warmly,

Hi George. I explained in pretty good detail in my
private email to you what my signature tag means.
Actually, perhaps you'd like to forward some of that
here, if you think it would be useful to others.

But I guess I didn't really explain n^0.

First, you might want to open a separate window with
this to help guide you:
http://www.ixpres.com/interval/monzo/lattices/lattices.htm

The n^0 is simply a way of designating the point in
my lattices where *every* prime-factor has an exponent
of zero. That only occurs at one place in my lattices,
the 1/1 point. An exponent of zero gives an expression
a value of 1, and so the point which is all 1 is the
reference unison interval 1/1, or n^0 for me.

Each exponent of a prime-factor is represented on my
lattices (and others, and odd-factors on some others)
as a step of one lattice metric along the lines which
radiate outward from each lattice-point. The lines
themselves represent the prime-factors, and there are
as many dimensions in the lattice as there are factors.

Most of my lattices ignore the 2:1 ("octave") ratio,
so a Pythagorean lattice, made up of only powers of 3,
is linear or 1-dimensional. A 5-limit lattice, made
up of prime-factors 3 and 5, is a planar or 2-dimensional
grid. A 7-limit lattice, made up of 3, 5, and 7, is
cubic or 3-dimensional. Etc.

Each linear prime-axis (or composite-axis, if made up of
more than one prime) gives a chain of generators the size
of the basic prime interval. So the Pythagorean linear
graph shows a chain of 3:2s ascending and descending from
the central n^0, with positive and negative exponents
respectively.

The basic 5-axis, which passes thru n^0, gives a chain of
5:4s ascending and descending. There are other chains
of 5:4s passing thru each of the exponents of 3, or
conversely, you could see this same grid as having
other chains of 3:2s passing thru each exponent of 5.

And so on for all the other prime-factors.
