apparently your idea here is to use the staff notation
as given by a scanner, and then enter this into your
composition program.

I might suggest an alternative method - use standard midi files
(many are available on the web). This way you need only write a program
that parses the midi files rather than parses the score.

Is there a wide variety of music available on the Internet?
I don't have much experience with the music available-I'm usually looking at
cosmology and tuning.

Will check it out.
