p'ipa tuning

i use a fourths tuning on the electric pipa although
larkinam.com gives the tuning as A D E A.

at one point lark in the morning offered a p'ipa in
either chinese of western fretting. i looked at some chinese music
albums which i bought 20 years ago and the picture of the p'ipa is
clearly NOT CHROMATIC.

probably the demand for p'ipas in the west, also, included a familiar
scale, which the chinese factories were happy to oblige ( and the
cultural revolution must have played a part in the adoption of the
yellow running dog's scale ).
