I found a site with info on DVD audio:

http://www.digitalaudioguide.com/faq/dvd-audio/faq_intro.htm

In brief, DVD audio has up to 24 bits per sample, with sample rates
up to 192 KHz (over four times faster than CD's!), and up to 6 channels.
It's gonna be very cool! Lessee: looks like with more than 2 channels,
the maximum sampling rate is "only" 96 KHz, though.

There is also support for Meridian Lossless Packing (MLP), which
approximately doubles playback time at no reduction in quality.

As for the digital/analog debate, I've always hated the problems of
analog recording (my phonograph records always seemed to develop
scratches and pops no matter how carefully I treated them, and I was
always aware of distortion in the louder passages, especially on the
inside part of the phonograph (i.e., the dramatic climax at the end of
the piece)). I'm not one of those "golden eared" people who finds fault
with CD digital audio. I have a feeling there will always be some who
think analog is better than digital in some way, no matter how refined
digital gets. At some point, substance gives way to religion. And, in
truth, I could probably be classified as a "true believer" in the
benefits of digital, especially the capability of making exact
n-generation copies.
