microtones in Denver

With folks talking about cities where microtonality is taught, I'd
like to say that although small, the Denver micro scene is very
healthy...the press has been very receptive, and many "ordinary" folks,
musicians and no, are very aware of what we're doing here. All of my
students (and there's a lot of them) are introduced to the basic
concepts, and John Starrett and Richard Krantz have presented numerous
seminars at a local college as well, with positive results. The
Microstock fest is in it's 5th year (this year's guest is pipa virtuoso
Gao Hong, on September 18), and we actually do our fair share of
gigs/clinics...plus, a number of folks have refretted their guitars, or,
as Chris Mohr is preparing to do, have retuned their synths (in his
case, to 53 eq). In case anyone is in the area on Saturday, March 27, I
am doing a concert at Cameron Church with 3 other (nonmicro)
guitarists...to check out a very well written interview regarding said
gig, go to www.theonion.com...the article is by Jeff Stratton, and is in
the March25-31 issue. This area is wide open to what we're doing, and it
will get better and better as more folks hear of it...Hstick

Well that article you're talking about isn't up yet,
but in the meantime we can ejoy other articles like

"New Study Finds College Binge Drinking To Be A Blast",
"Aspiring Actress' Vagina Photographed",
"Miracle Overpass Issues Mysterious Stream Of Urine",

and my fave:

"Father Only Expresses Love Through Concern For Proper Tire Inflation"

Did you look at this site before you posted it to the list?

Something tells me that this review isn't going to shed
the best light on microtonality!

Isn't the pipa normally a 12TET instrument? Does this one have a different
fretting? I remember Lou Harrison complaining about this during the
composition of his recent pipa concerto.

For those interested, there's a great essay about
the lore of the pipa and its possible relation to
one of La Monte Young's _Compositions 1960_ in the
book _Sound and Light_.
