Hello, there, everyone, and maybe rather than enter the meantone dialogue
at this point, I should request a few days to draft my "Meantone and Modal
Music, c. 1450-1640" submission for the FAQ, which should address some of
the issues raised.

Of course, I can now write taking into account not only Daniel Wolf's
excellent draft focused mainly on the later meantone era, which my earlier
focus should complement with a minimum of duplication, but other remarks
and drafts which raise important questions very helpful in writing my FAQ
draft.

By the way, Dan, our drafts may touch on some common points: bass movement
by a third is a routine feature of Renaissance style, both in conventional
diatonic and radical chromatic settings, and also fits the frequently
important role of the third degree of a mode both in traditional modal
theory and in its modernized version offered by Zarlino (1558 and later).

The reason that I'm requesting a few days is that I do have a paper to
finish, and I realize that unless I take a kind of moratorium from all-out
FAQ participation and the like (hard to do, but maybe necessary), it won't
get written. I apologize for the delay, but hope that my early meantone
FAQ draft may address some of the issues raised in recent posts as well as
meet some general needs of newcomers.

Also, I'm planning submissions on "What is JI?" and "What is
microtonality?" -- which I maybe I can write better when I know that the
paper is completed. Again, posts on these topics have given me some ideas.

Most appreciatively,

Margo Schulter
