This is totally off-topic, but can anyone recommend an inexpensive domain
name registration service?

I used and have been quite satisfied with

http://www.yournamefree.com/

As of last July, they gave a discount over the nominal fee of $35 per
year - they were offering 2 years for $60. They don't provide any web
space, but they do offer free forwarding for web access and e-mail.
There HAVE been a couple of times that e-mail got stuck (I think with
them) for a few days, but compared to other e-mail horror stories going
on right now with my employer, that's not bad.

A reminder to all list members: domain names are going fast! It is very
useful to have your chosen name reserved: it becomes like a permanent
phone number where you can always be reached, no matter where your
actual web pages and/or e-mail server are located at any given moment.
Very nice!

Other notables are www.networksolutions.com and www.register.com.

I think register.com is probably easier to manage for a private user,
although I prefer NSI for all my work-related domain management, they're a
little better at letting you manage huge numbers of domains.
