David,

This is FANTASTIC!!!

I love Yellow Star!!

The beautiful comma glide in the melody is just too incredible. Gave
me chills!

Keep this beautiful music flowing - you've got my attention. Spam all
you like!

Gratefully,

Jacky Ligon

P.S. Did you use your guitar as a controller for this? Do you sing?

Thanks. The glide is from 18/17 to 17/16. 6 cents.

David, I know this is your piece, but I think there might be come confusion
here. Coming right after the first three notes of the repeated melody, the
glide is from some sort of minor sixth to some sort of neutral sixth over
the low bass drone. It's clearly larger than 6 cents, which would be right
at the limen of melodic discrimination, and probably not any bigger than the
chorusing you've already got on that melody patch.

3/2, 1/1, 7/4, 18/17, 17/16.

OK -- I was hearing the third harmonic of these notes. I wonder why the 6
cent shift is so easily audible?

Timbral illusion perhaps?

Because the notes sustain for so long, it gets imprinted in your ear.
When you hear the second note, your brain says "hey! this is a little
sharper!".

And what exactly is the limen of melodic discrimination?

If people can't hear 6 cents, why would we need synths
with better than 1 cent resolution?

skiddy-boo-boo-bop.

It's the smallest _melodic_ interval that is audible as a pitch change.

Because the limen of _harmonic_ discrimination is far less than 6 cents -- less than 2 cents, even,
in many circumstances.

Clearly, in your example, the melodic shift of 6 cents becomes audible for one reason or
another -- maybe it's the fact that you glide from one pitch to the other, in combination with the
chorus, I don't know.

Ah - 3/2 vs. the 12tet 5th.

There is no chorus. I used a preset on the ms2000r and tweeked it.
Twiddled the res and cut off knobs. It sounds like the open oscillator
on my ARP Axe. And this is a model of that sound - I hear this sound
in electronica all the time. I'm tired of going for the optimum
patch for JI, I choose to go for what sounds good over some theory.
