Hi Tuning Group,

I downloaded Csound version win409.zip from
ftp://ftp.maths.bath.ac.uk/pub/dream/newest/
Please tell me if this is the right version.
I understand that the installation process is somewhat involved.
Therefore before I continue I'd like to know if this is the correct
version to Run using Win 95 as my Operating System?

Regards
Walter

I think you should be fine.
Csound is rather simple for windows
just unpack the zip
i recommend using Gabe Maldonados Direct Csound for any MIDI interface stuff
i found the easiest way to create f tables with your tuning scales in them
Bill Alves was a big help to me setting up the tables.
tuning folks should get familiar with the cpsXpch opcodes and conversions
i have a few pieces for Csound examples on da tunnin punX
which employ HZ and octave point specifications
i will gladly attach the sco and orc
they may be of value as they are simple and rather easy to pick apart
and experiment in JI
email me privately for them if youse want

It is OK. The latest version is 4.10 which was released on 2001
January 6. All you lose is a couple of new opcodes, the denoiser, and
a few bug fixes (the pvanal utility dialog is broken in 4.09 for
example)

It is not supposed to be. Just place the files winsound.exe and
csound.txt somewhere, and run.

winsound or consound depending if you like mouse-clicking or
commandlines. if you have any problems you can always mail me.

Personally, I tried downloading and operating one of the "newer"
versions of CSOUND and nothing would render at all.

Therefore, I went back to an older version, windsound.exe and,
although it's buggy in the sense that I get some Windows crashes in
bigger files, at least I can get it to do SOMETHING.

I would tell you the specific versions I used, but the CSOUND
Frontpage appears to be down at the moment...

I've had good luck with Gabriel Maldonado's "Direct CSound" for Windows.
That's the version that's bundled with Michael Gogins' "Silence". I've
forgotten the URL, but that should be easy to find with a search engine.

I had similar problems until I used Csounder. This interface allows me to
manage Csound projects effectively with a GUI. Its setup menus prompt
relevant questions that I might otherwise overlook.

Csounder is NOT an option for Csound frankly
Use the executable that is included get a few benchmarks from the net and
run em

Thanks so much, Greg, for your tip. I found this "front end" here:

http://www.omnids.com/software/index.html

Well, I can't really see yet how it differs so much from Winsound...
perhaps I will later. It's got some nice pictures on it, though!

I'm still having problems rendering stuff no matter which version or
front-end I use.

I guess I'll just have to spend some more time with this. (Like LOTS
of it... yabba, dabba, do!)
