Hi Charles

Thank you for the great link on colors and tones. I've been hanging
out at your web site and taking in allot of knowledge. Is Lucy
Tuning based on JI?? Has anyone ever completely solved the mystery of
modulating between all keys using JI??

No, but it's a pretty good meantone tuning.

There's no mystery. In one sense, this is trivial if you have an infinite
number of pitches (or, say, 53). In another sense, you can't even play in
one key in JI, let alone produce the kinds of modulations that the great
composers used in their music. Check out Mathieu's book _The Harmonic
Experience_, Blackwood's book _The Structure of Recognizable Diatonic
Tunings_, and the Helmholtz book you already have for elaborations of these
"senses" of taking your question.

I think it's safe to say the answer is "no". One possible approach is
exemplified by the work I've done in adaptive tuning; MIDI examples are
at my web at

http://www.adaptune.com

For arbitrarily modulating pieces, there will always be conflict
between achieving good vertical intervals (chords well tuned) and
holding pitch degrees at constant tuning over time (avoiding horizontal
motion). I attempt to seek a best possible compromise for a given
sequence by letting all the considerations argue among themselves in
a defined way.
