Composition Again

I don't claim to be a highly-experienced composer, but here's another
piece of composing wisdom I'm only now beginning to realize, even though
I've known it for a while:

Don't feel like everything you write has to be a masterpiece.

Now, by that I certainly don't mean that you shouldn't take your work
seriously and work on it in careful detail. What I mean is that there's
nothing at all wrong with writing short compositions just simply to test
ideas, or to practice your sonic imagery skills. Beethoven left behind a
lot of detailed sketchbooks, for example.
