The Claremont Colleges are pleased to announce a Conference and
Festival of Music in Alternate Tunings as a part of MicroFest 2001, the
Southern California celebration of microtonal music. We seek papers,
compositions, and other participation for this event, to be held Friday
through Sunday, April 6-8, 2001. MicroFest is not exclusive of any musical
style or tuning system, except twelve-tone equal temperament.

CALL FOR PAPERS
---------------
MicroFest 2001 seeks proposals for presentations in a variety of formats
on the use of non-12-tone equal tempered tunings and temperaments in
music - contemporary, historical, Western, non-Western, and all styles.
Topic areas could include but need not be limited to:

o Theories of scale construction and use in contemporary composition;
o Historical tunings and temperaments in the West;
o Tuning systems in non-Western cultures;
o Analysis and demonstrations of tuning in compositions;
o Practical performance considerations and instrument construction;
o Psychoacoustic foundations of tuning systems.

Presentations may take the form of papers, lecture-demonstrations, panel
discussions, or other formats. Presentations by a single person will
normally last 25 minutes, though exceptions may be made depending on the
proposal. Panel discussions will generally last no more than 50 minutes.
Proposals should include:

o Title and abstract.
o Author's name, address, phone, fax, email.
o Format of presentation (paper, lecture-demo, panel, other).
o Details of audio-visual requirements, including what the presenter can
and cannot provide.
o A brief biography of the author (no more than 150 words).
o For proposals of panel discussions or other presentations involving
more than one person, all contributions should be specified.

Email proposals are preferred, but hardcopy proposals may be sent to the
address below.

CALL FOR COMPOSITIONS
---------------------
MicroFest 2001 seeks submissions of compositions in definite tunings
other than 12-tone equal temperament. Submissions may be in one of the
following three categories:

o Electronic tape or disc alone (DAT or CD preferred).
o Videotape alone (VHS, S-VHS, or DVD. NTSC only, please).
o Live performance.

For most live performance proposals, the composer will be asked to
provide all necessary performers. Please indicate whether the composer
will be able to attend the conference. Submissions should include:

o For electronic or video works, the concert-quality tape or disc. For
live performance submissions, a tape of a prior performance is
encouraged. MIDI realizations are acceptable if no performance
recording is available. Tapes without SASE cannot be returned.
o A score, if available. Scores without SASE cannot be returned.
o For live performance proposals, a detailed list of all necessary
equipment and setup, including what the composer can and cannot
provide.
o Program notes, including information on the tuning.
o A brief biography of the composer (no more than 150 words).
o If you are providing performers (other than the composer), names
and brief biographies of the performers.
o Composer's name, address, phone, fax, email
