Hi there -

I read what was said abpout the TX81Z with interest. But whoever it
was (I've managed to delete the original message I'm afraid) talked
about tuning it with Scala. Am I right in thinking that there's no Mac
version of Scala around? And if not, how can I best set about using one
with a Mac (currently running Logic)? I just want to be sure it'll work
before I look for/ buy one.

Thanks (as always) for the time you give hopeless beginners

Adam Bushell

Hello Adam...

Unfortunately Scala is only PC-based. Perhaps Darren Burgess or Pat
Pagano, both of whom have considerable experience with the TX81Z can
help you...

In the meantime, you might want to check John Starrett's software
listings to see if anything can pertain to the MAC...

No Mac version i am afraid
but all you really need is some way to send the sseyx to the TX81z
sounds rather nice and there are tons of cool patches available
let me know how you make out

The Mac version of the Just Intonation Calculator will send tuning
table SYSEX commands to a TX81Z. It doesn't read Scala files directly
but does read a very similar ASCII file format of its own (ratio
tunings only, however). Since JICalc doesn't seem to reside at the
Mills ftp site any more I've uploaded a copy to

Dear Ken, Joe & Swifty,

Thanks for the ideas - and Ken, thanks so much for JICalc. It looks
great, and even before I get a microtunable synth it'll help massively.
I sing intervals for ear training anyway, so having a reliable source of
JI intervals and non-ET ratios (other than guitar strings) is great.

So then - TX81Z it is. Or suitable equivalent. Whatever I find
first. Would you believe that after months reading this list I haven't
really got past reading books and listening to Uncle Harry (and a few
other non-ET notable and tuning punks). So now its time to get my hands
dirty, and get rational.

Of course, I still have to make it work with USB. If it comes to it,
though, I can be all grown up and work out how to program a sysex dump
through Logic myself.

Thanks again

Adam
