I think piano roll sequencers with Midi Relay/any tunable sound module is the best way to explore different tuning systems, using what is available now.It is also a good way to understand the abstract and aural features of a tuning system,as a preparation to working with a tuning acoustic instruments.

You do need a good ear and a sense for the visual representation of relative musical intervals-which is why a lot of people dont like piano roll composing. But if you know piano rolls well, its actually very easy to adapt it to a different equal or unequal fixed tuning-as for non-fixed tunings,i am not experienced.I am personally not a strong promoter for any such (non-)systems,as i prefer the strong logic and the distinctiveness of a closed system like 17 or 22 equal.
