Here's an idea to mull over - how about letting the l-system tree evolve
gradually.

So starts going up and down scale in rather tame way. Then gradually does
all the wild stuff, then perhaps back to scale at the end.

Or, starts one scale, ends in another, via wild transition, gradually using
more and more pieces of second scale and less and less of third.

Or, could have two scales, and three numbers - wildness of 1st scale,
wildness of transition, and wildness of 2nd scale. Then original is what you
get with both scales the same, and all three numbers the same.

Anyway, whatever you do, look forward to hearing how it develops,
