Big news in the New York Times a month ago or so, was the continuing
"controversy" between La Monte Young and Tony Conrad regarding the
authorship of one of La Monte Young's compositions.

The link was given in the New York Times, and I read it then... but I
haven't seen it posted to the Tuning List. Perhaps it has been and I
missed it (??).

I find the discussion (it's in a fairly lengthy .pdf file) very
interesting, because it touches on the notion of composition,
improvisation and authorship and "performing rights." Lots of
practical things for composers come together in this article which
you can find at:

http://lamonteyoung.com/news.htm

I guess the "jury" is still out on this stuff (???...)

There is a mela@egroups.com, but it's kind of dead
these days. Over the summer it was real busy, you might
want to check out the archives. I know La Monte talks
about releasing this music but it all moves slowly.

Thanks, David, for this information. I wasn't aware of this. I just
joined. Looks like Banaphshu actually was doing some mischief over
there (?!!)

Speaking obliquely of that... I noticed that I could IMMEDIATELY
join the "melos" site... so there is NO GLOBAL restrictions on
egroups memberships unless the MODERATOR requests them...

Just a tidbit to add to the "stew."

He sent it to me and I posted it. It's a riot, I hope I didn't
insult La Monte. :)

That's right.
