This is the molecular design of one of the
healthy new scales we'll be feeding our pianos
from now on :-)

Can the molecular designer of the model please do one but leave out the
qualities from 5??

Well, if you just remove from that diagram
all ratios having 5 as a factor, you're not
left with much:

7/6-------7/4
,' `. ,' `.
4/3-------1/1-------3/2-------9/8

Doesn't look too healthy, from a
harmonic standpoint - but melodically,
it's one rational interpretation of a
staple of the world's musical diet,
the pentatonic scale (actually with an
added "9th"):

1/1 - (9/8) - 7/6 - 4/3 - 3/2 - 7/4
A (B) C D E G

As a matter of fact, it makes a nice
basis for a blues scale.

Perhaps you wanted something more complex?

I think Pat was making joke - feeding the piano hay
and excluding the five limit ratios relate to
La Monte Young.

feeding the piano hay = one of those Compositions from 1960
excluding the five limit ratios = the current version of the WTP tuning

Joe
please see d beardsley's post
I remove 6/5, 5/4, etc...
from all new scales I build and use 17/16 instead of 16/15 or 10/9
for the tuning scale I was referring to see K. Gann's article,"outer edge of
Consonance" in Sound and Light

[Beardsley:]
> I think Pat was making [a] joke

So you didn't catch my allusion to
a "staple of the world's musical diet"?

Actually, I only decided to go ahead and
post on this after I realized that this
scale (without the 9/8) was a subject I'd
considered in my book. Thought it was
worth doing.

Been there, done that. Actually it's one
of my favorite books I picked up in '98.
Dave and I were hanging out a lot in NYC
last year, and he turned me on to a lot of
stuff by Young. Looking forward to hearing
what you're doing with non-5 JI!

Guess you guys don't like my sense of humor :(
