Re: [tuning] Mathematical proofs vs. musical proofs.4

Once, I had the chance to write on the Berlin Wall "Microtones sind frei"
because my already owned musical instrument -- in the case, the bassoon --
could play any microtone "for free." While a bassoon is way more expensive
than most synthesizers, added microtones cost nothing (as with most all other
instruments).

Yes, we'd love to come out to Oregon, Ed. Have you met bassist Guy Tyler. I
suggested to him Oregon when he was looking to transplant from NY.

Re Bach: I was using Bach as a generalization for the late greats, not
specifically. I immediately switched to the 3 B's, and then to the
"pre-1950s composers."

A millionaire friend once said to me (an avid art collector and musical
instrument collector) it is not the great music and art that should be noted,
rather it is the paucity of individuals that recognize such quality that is
so rare and vital for its continuance. Inherently, I disagree, but I was
think deeply about it.

Yes, that's all well and good, but it's a cop-out. Your original message stated:

>Re Jon Szanto's rant against microtonal composition not being like Bach, this
>is an old, but transplanted argument. (nothing personal)

...which by any reasonable reading makes it appear attributed to me. And that, dear friend, is not acceptable. Send all apologies to shoddy_journalism@corporeal.com.

Oh, please! I've written you for years, Johnny, and this was simply a dyslexic (sp?) typo on my part, and Bob's post only contained it in a quote from me. Tell you what: I've now added your name to my automatic spellchecker in Eudora 4.2, and it won't ever happen again.

Tonight, when I get home from work, I'll post a response to what's gone down in the last two days and then we can move on (or at least I will...).

Very truly yours,
Jhan Zsaanto
